In collaboration with Jabari Woods (Associate Director of HR & Equity, Equity Coordinator), the Davenport Education Association Multicultural Committee Chair, Jamie Walker-Sallis, are releasing the following statement on behalf of the Davenport Education Association Multicultural Committee:
In wake of the tragic incidents which have occurred in Davenport, Minnesota and throughout the nation, it is vital now more than ever we push for honest racial reform policies for students, parents, staff, law enforcement and city officials. These policies must clearly promote equity in our schools and fair treatment of all students and staff members of color. We must form collaborative teams including all stakeholders, to ensure disproportionality and systemic institutional racism is identified and removed in a nonviolent, solution-focused manner.
The Davenport Community School District certified student enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year reflects 44.31% of students identifying as persons of color. This statistic alone demonstrates why we have a vested interest in promoting equity and fair treatment within our school district.
All students should be valued and treated equally.
